Shoulder Surgery Rehabilitation
Shoulder surgery rehabilitation for the North Gold Coast, based in Pimpama
Recovering from shoulder surgery is about more than waiting for tissues to heal. Whether you've had a rotator cuff repair, shoulder stabilisation procedure, labral repair, shoulder replacement, or decompression surgery, the quality of your rehabilitation plays a major role in your final outcome.
At Restorativ Physiotherapy, we specialise in post-surgical rehabilitation and provide structured, phase-based recovery programs designed to help patients restore movement, rebuild strength, and confidently return to work, sport, and everyday life.
Why rehabilitation matters after shoulder surgery
Surgery addresses the structural problem, but rehabilitation is what helps restore function. Without appropriate rehabilitation, patients may experience ongoing stiffness, weakness, loss of movement, reduced confidence, ongoing pain, and difficulty returning to normal activities. A structured rehabilitation program helps restore strength, mobility, control, and confidence while protecting the surgical repair during each stage of healing.
Shoulder surgery we commonly rehabilitate
Our physiotherapists support patient's recoveries on a daily basis including:
Rotator Cuff Repair: Rotator cuff surgery is commonly performed to repair damaged tendons within the shoulder. Rehabilitation focuses on protecting healing tissues initially before progressively restoring movement, strength, and function.
Shoulder Stabilisation Surgery: For patients who have experienced recurrent shoulder dislocations or instability, rehabilitation focuses on rebuilding shoulder control, strength, and confidence while reducing the risk of future episodes.
Labral Repair: Labral surgery often requires a carefully structured progression through each rehabilitation phase to allow appropriate healing before returning to heavier activities and sport.
Shoulder Replacement Surgery: Following shoulder replacement, rehabilitation focuses on restoring movement, reducing pain, improving strength, and helping patients return to daily activities with confidence.
Subacromial Decompression and other procedures
All our physios have experience across multiple shoulder surgery rehabilitation, and we are preferred physios for multiple surgeons in the Northern Gold Coast geography. We develop tailored rehabilitation programs based on your surgeon's recommendations, surgical protocol, and individual recovery goals. Additionally, we communicate back to your medical team to ensure your care is coordinated.
What to expect during rehabilitation
While every surgery and patient is different, rehabilitation typically progresses through several key stages.
Phase 1: Protection and early recovery: This phase focuses on early rehabilitation which includes managing pain and swelling, protecting surgical repairs, gentle mobility exercises, maintaining movement in surrounding joints, improving comfort during daily activities. During this phase, patients often wear a sling and follow specific movement restrictions provided by their surgeon.
Phase 2: Restoring mobility: Once healing allows, rehabilitation progresses towards improving shoulder movement, restoring flexibility, reducing stiffness, improving movement quality, restoring confidence with everyday tasks. This phase is essential for regaining functional use of the shoulder.
Phase 3: Strength and control: As healing progresses, rehabilitation becomes more active and may include: Rotator cuff strengthening, scapular control exercises, progressive resistance training, functional strengthening, movement retraining. The goal is to restore shoulder capacity while maintaining excellent movement quality.
Phase 4: Return to work and sport: The final phase focuses on work-specific conditioning, sport-specific rehabilitation, sdvanced strengthening, functional testing, long-term injury prevention. Our goal is to help you return safely and confidently to the activities that matter most.
